When the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) build a filter they make the manifold and they make the cartridge. But what you probably don’t know is that their manifolds are not the exact same size on every port.
The OEMs customize each cartridge before it goes into the filter so, when it gets installed with the pool, it works perfectly because each filter is fit exactly for the individual port.
But we don’t have the luxury of customizing every cartridge as replacement manufacturers because we don’t know what manifold size you have out there in the field.
So what most cartridge manufacturers do is create a cartridge that is “one size fits all.” And what typically happens is that cartridge winds up being a little bit larger than the known openings of a particular manufacturer so when that filter gets installed it’s not really a good tight fit on that port.
So When the filter cartridge loads up with debris and algae, the pressure rises, and the water looks for the path of least resistance. And that path is between the top of the filter and the bottom of the manifold.
The debris that you see flowing back into the pool is the direct result of that.
At Filbur, we’ve designed a cartridge that will give you a positive seal at that port. We use a flexible antimicrobial urethane that expands so that when the manifold is put down on top of it, so it gives you a positive seal at that opening.
This provides a direct path into the filter media fabric and not around it. Allowing all of the dirt debris etc to pass through the filter and not back into the pool.
So now you know why dirt passes through some cartridge filters, and which cartridge has the solution to that problem.
